Handbook
Woodward Barbers is an organization dedicated to the exceptional treatment of our team and our clients.
We believe in being inclusive and fostering an environment where everyone is respected and valued no matter where they come from, what they look like or who they love. We are committed to helping you do your best work.
ROLES:
At Woodward Barbers we offer two barber roles, Full-Time and Variable-Time. The difference determines if benefits are offered. A full-time Barber works 40 hours per week and is offered benefits. If you wish to work less than 40 hrs a week, you may do so and you will be in the “variable-time” role and waive benefits. There is no minimum hours for a variable time role.
Barbers willing to work more will be given scheduling priority when we have more barbers than chairs. There is no penalty for choosing a variable-time role, but we encourage those who are full-time to maintain their full-time position. We wish to continue to provide the health insurance benefit to anyone who wants it. We don’t want anyone to go without them.COMMISSION:
All current barbers will receive 55% commission to treat everyone the same and give a level playing field. The only potential exceptions are those who are designated with extra responsibility at the shop or entry-level barbers.
PRICING/LENGTH OF SERVICE:
Some people work differently and/or may be in high demand and would like to tailor their offerings with some variation to the shop template. Therefore, prices and appointment length may be adjustable for each barber. A 75%+ booking rate must be reached before requesting a price increase and the adjustments must be accepted by management. Raising rates may result in a reduction of clients for those who do.
It may end up being an equal change in earnings overall, and hopefully an increase in earnings over time. This will create a higher demand for those who are not raising rates resulting in higher earning opportunities from increased volume. The ability to grow your income will be determined by your service quality, availability and rates. Barbers are not permitted to pick and choose which services to offer.
BENEFIT PACKAGE:
All full-time Barbers are offered the following benefits:
- Medical/Dental/Vision: 50% employer contribution of the barber premium.
- Family members optionally covered at the expense of the barber.
- Life Insurance provided 100% by the employer. $50k benefit provided to assigned beneficiary.
- 401k Plan
ANNUAL BONUS:
- We offer an incentive to all barbers regardless of role. Anyone who reaches $120,000 in total sales of services and products (and fully participates with shop duties) will receive a $2,000 year end bonus.
- This is a very attainable goal when looking at our past results. Bonus qualification is linked to overall compliance with all other requirements.
- Bonuses are paid at year-end.
- $120k at 55% commission is $66,000 in gross pay to the barber (before tips). The $2,000 would be paid in addition to the 55% commission.
- Tips are excluded from this calculation.
- Barbers who are consistently late, not helping around the shop, and not contributing to social posts will be excluded from bonus consideration.
REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Professionalism
- Arrive 15 mins before your start time to help prepare the shop and be ready to welcome your clients as a fully prepared professional. If your client arrives 5 mins early and beats you there, that is not acceptable.
- Be professional in your: appearance/hygiene, interaction with clients and each other, attentiveness and attitude with clients on the phone, and overall attention to your craft.
- Refrain from any shop talk one the floor, including speaking of cancelled appointments, escalations with clients, slow days or things of this nature.
- Do not sit in your barber chair on your phone while any clients are in the shop. If you must use your phone please make sure you conduct your business in the breakroom or outside of the shop. Be attentive to all clients.
- Keep all spaces tidy, free of hair, and sanitary. Comply with legal regulations.
- It is your responsibility to keep track of resources we send you.
- No use of products we do not have in stock or in our back bar.
- Responsibilities
- Contribute to shop “chores” equally. Towels, trash, sweeping, answering the phone, etc. If you are not participating in chore contribution, chores will be assigned equally on a weekly basis.
- Photos
- Submit weekly pics and videos for our social media posts. Submitting pics will be a part of the bonus structure qualifications. Please make sure to submit photos via the link provided to you.
- If you are posting your work on your own social media page please tag the shop so your posts can be shared on stories or as a collaboration. Posting often helps with your business. It’s free advertising!
- Photos submitted via Signal will not be accepted.
- Scheduling
- Do not block your breaks in the first or last hour of your shift. If you need to start later or finish your day early please submit a time off request.
- Do not adjust the appointment length of a client except in special circumstances.
FLEXIBLE TIME OFF:
Woodward Barbers offers a flexible time off policy to all employees. Requests must be approved and submitted for schedule accuracy and historical reference. Barbers who take too much time off will first see the natural consequence of reduced earnings and eventually receive a reduced role at the shop. For example, if you are full-time, you will be moved to variable time and have a reduced schedule permitted.
Time Off Guidelines:
- Full-Time barbers must provide make-up days for excess missed days to maintain full-time status. Excessive days missed is considered over 80 hours.
- Schedule adjustments: must be requested two weeks in advance using the existing online link.
- Last-Minute adjustments also require online submission. A text message is not enough.
- There is no need to send a message on Signal when requests are submitted in advance.
- Abuse of the time-off flexibility will result in change of role or termination.
- We encourage you to pick up alternative dates or trade with others when possible. We want you to be successful in your barbering business.
- We will be keeping a detailed accounting of time off. You can see this log upon request.
